We recently celebrated 30 year of DXA developments in which we saw many technological innovations and improvements in image quality. These advancements have so far been dominated by two companies, GE and Hologic. Now DMS Imaging is trying to take a piece of the pie. However, we have very little information about their devices. If you visit the website you will find some nice pictures.
However, these are not actually DXA images. They are single energy X-rays images as you can see from the brightness of the soft tissue. I even doubt these images were made by their device. I have already shown you that DMS used images made by the GE iDXA device (pictures they had taken from my publications) to promote 3D-DXA.
Dual energy X-ray images brings with it some considerable chalenges and it is here where Hologic and GE have gained the technological experience in the past 30 years to provide the quality images that we rely on.
We were recently treated by real DXA images from the latest Stratos dR DXA device through a paper on 3D-DXA of the spine. Compare these with the iDXA device and the difference is striking.
Do we really want go back several decades with our technology to examine our elderly? Also, how on earth can you reconstruct a 3D model of the vertebrae with the cortical thickness from this image???
